Electrification and drinking water project with
Chiwias community photovoltaic system
The Chiwias community is located in the jungle of southeastern Ecuador, in the Morona Santiago Province, Taisha Canton, Tutinentsa Association, near the Kankaim River, about 25 km from the border with Peru.
The Shuar population of Chiwias lives mainly by planting cassava and plantain, hunting wild animals, and fishing. The average gross monthly income for a family is less than US$20, much of which is spent on air travel.
It is important that the community has its photovoltaic energy system to be able to carry out daily tasks such as educating children, even at night, having access to information through the media.
The solar system helps preserve the ecosystem of the primary and secondary forest.
The implementation of a solar energy generation system for the community's water and electricity was planned, but currently, due to financing problems, only the part of the provision of photovoltaic electrical energy was executed.
The solar energy system initially consists of 6 Isofoton I 165 panels and 1 I 110 panel with a total of 3850 Whp/d (peak watt hours per day), 10 MAC seasonal accumulators of 12 V (volts) 150 Ah (ampere hours) , 1 Isofoton I 30 A regulator, 1 Triplite APS 2400 W inverter (110 V alternating current generation for the local electrical network) and a control box.
The Chiwias system generates energy for light consumption (currently there are at least 2 15 W fluorescent lights) and radio tape recorder in the houses.
The 24 families now have with the solar energy system during the day the possibility of listening to the radio, using blenders and fans. At night they can use their energy-saving lamps.
Water pumps with solar photovoltaic energy, they do not need transformers, poles. Installation without connection to the public electricity network. Profitable with low daily costs, Irrigation systems, for livestock, with a long useful life.
Electric solar systems independent or autonomous. Support and protection of medical and computer equipment, radio communication, electric fences. Photovoltaic panels, MPPT regulators, stationary batteries (lithium), and pure sine wave inverters.
El proyecto está coejecutado por la comunidad Chiwias y CODESO.
Currently the Chiwias community, together with 10 other communities of the Tutinentsa Association, is questioning the financing for electrification, safe water, latrine and shower projects.
The radio communication project is also important, the next radio station is a 9-hour walk from the commune, which makes it impossible to have emergency medical attention.
Other planned projects are ecotourism, cultural rescue and crafts, important for the socio-development of families. Support is sought to improve the standard of living.
